centre for the region. The Workhouse serves also as a visitor attraction, giving guided tours at specific times telling the story of the workhouse system in Ireland and the experiences of the poor who lived here. The Irish Workhouse Centre (SEGIRD Clg) is a not for-profit charity, overseen by a voluntary board, and employs seasonal tour guides (part-financed by Pobal through CSP) aided in most years by
volunteers, often retired persons drawn from the local community.
We also act, voluntarily, as the Tourist Information Point for the region.
Our community efforts reach to supporting persons with intellectual disabilities through
our support for the Alor Star Mental Health Centre in Portumna.
We provide a heritage/educational service to the wider community, delivering historical conferences on-site such as the annual conference supported by Galway County Council entitled ‘Famine, Workhouses and Institutional Care’. In conjunction with Galway Roscommon ETB we delivered an art appreciation course to the public over ten weeks and a creative writing workshop funded by the Creative Ireland Fund. In conjunction with University of Limerick we ran a successful Certificate in Local History course.
Our rooms are also used for training purposes, facilitated by Galway Rural Development, which included disability awareness training for IWC staff and the wider community and a ‘Make Way Day’ highlighting needs of people with disability in our public streetscapes and spaces and Fire safety and Health and Safety in Workplace training.
In September we provided gallery space for art exhibitions as part of the local Portumna Shorelines Arts Festival and hosted a public consultation evening run by Galway County Council in relation to proposed town enhancement plans.
We also provdied voluntary work experience for a French student and a local transition year student during the year and we are suported on-site by maintenance operatives from TUS/RSS.
